Six week old puppies
2006 Litter Photo - Nala about 10 Months Old Winter 2007

Subject: pic's of Nala

Hey Brien

Thought I would send you some recent pictures of Nala at 10 months old she is about 60 lbs . She has taken on more of the Weimaraner look with the deep chest. She is a real sweetheart tho still a couch potato loves the snow, I just hope she grows to love the water this summer, we are always at camp . Last summer she would not go near the water.

Take Care
Carrie L

Note From Brien: Carrie, I have discovered that the puppies will take to the water if they are allowed to play on the beach and if you do not force them into the water. By playing ball at the water's edge, they slowly get their feet wet. Soon they find themselves wading and before long, they are swimming. This process may take as many as a dozen exposures. One mistake though, pushing or pulling them into the water, and you will have a problem for a long time. Here is a video of Molly's first time in shallow water at age six months. Molly had seen water before but only the marsh edge of my pond and they don't go into the pond as the water is thick with bull rushes. They often get their feet wet though.

Subject: vac reactions

Hey Brien

I hope when people adopt your puppies they are informed to talk to their Veterinarians about the possibility of a reaction due to the fact they are 3/4 Weimaraner. I believe that is what happened to Nala! For her 2nd vacc. She was only given

12 weeks: Distemper, Adeno2, Parainfluenza and Parvo. I did not give her the Corona or the Lepto. She did not have a reaction to any other vacc. And had her 3rd @16 weeks and I held off with her Rabies for a week with no other problems, if people need to vaccinate their pups for Corona or Lepto, they should give it separate at least 2 weeks apart. Nala is doing great she is now 9 months and 60 pounds and about 25 inches at the withers. I have never seen a dog that can run like her she can run and jump like a deer. She is so smart we often forget she is a dog and not human, she is a couch potato tho and doesn't believe she is not a lap dog. I will send you a pic of her soon.

Vaccination regime for the Weimaraner

Several of the vaccine manufacturers assure that immunity in puppies can be achieved with only two vaccines providing the second vaccine is given at 12 weeks of age. Therefore the Board of Directors of the Weimaraner Club of America recommends the following vaccine schedule:

8 weeks: Distemper, Adeno2, Parainfluenza and Parvo.
12 weeks: Distemper, Adeno2, Parainfluenza and Parvo.

The use of Corona, Lepto, Bordatella and Lyme vaccine is not recommended unless these diseases are prevalent in the area. The recombinant DNA vaccines available for Distemper and Lyme have shown a significantly lower incidence of reactions.

While this protocol helps in preventing reactions, it does not prevent them in all susceptible individuals

Subject: RE: Pictures of Nala

Hey Brien

Well Nala is doing wonderful she had her surgeries her eye looks 100% now she is spayed and she had her hind dew claws removed ( she runs through the bush a lot and has caught it once ) so I had the hind ones removed she is all healed up and doing wonderful obedience is a breeze with her but she still thinks she is a little puppy has to be on my lap all the time but she weights 60 lbs now she is truly a wonderful addition to our family our older dog is much more active now they are real sisters .. I would love to consider getting another pup just like Nala in the future. I will send you some recent pictures of our little girl as soon as I find the cord for the digital camera? LOL

About Entropion or Diamond Eye:

Eyelids roll in and hair rubs on the cornea; effects are irritation, tearing and visual losses from scarring. This is what Nala had wrong with her eye. I don't know if this is a hereditary condition and don't know if you had this in any other puppies, Just a heads up if you do come across it. It is a costly repair.

Carrie

Note from Brien: This has happened to one puppy and seems to be an isolated problem. Turned in eyelids is frequently found in hound.

Hey Brien just wanted to give you an update on how Nala is doing!

She has been a wonderful girl she loves to go to camp and run on the beach and eat sand but is not to fond of the water . maybe next year she will swim with her big sister Nikki. Has been very healthy is going in to be spayed early as we want her eye fixed it seems to be bothering her more and more lately. She has started obedience and is a very smart girl learns quickly.

Did you have any other pups that have had this problem with there eyes? Her bottom eyelid on her left eye rolls right in and the hair and eyelashes are constantly rubbing on her eyeball. Just curious if you have had seen this before? I look back at her baby picture and she had problems with it from birth I guess, always watering and sometimes a discharge.

Thanks

Carrie and Nala
Note from Brien: This has happened to one puppy in four years and seems to be an isolated problem.
